  • Note: "The grave of a Shrewsbury pastor who had once served in the Imperial Guard of Napoleon Bonaparte was decorated Saturday by members of Austin L. Grove Post 403, American Legion, of Glen Rock. Rev. John Reinecke, who was the pastor of the Shrewsbury Reformed (now United Church of Christ) charge from 1837 to 1852, is buried in the old German Reformed church section of Shrewsbury's Christ Lutheran cemetery... Born Aug. 11, 1789 in the Electorate of Hesse, Germany, Reinecke in early manhood, after the French invaded his country, was conscripted into the Army of Napoleon I, under whom he served in a number of battles. With his regiment he was promoted to the Imperial Guard (composed of about 10,000 of the emperor's choicest troops) 'for prompt and gallant action in saving an ammunition train during a fire which occurred in a city in which they happened to be quartered.' He escaped the campaign of 1812 when he was ordered back to France during the invasion of Russia where most of Napoleon's army of 500,000 men was annihilated. Reinecke later defected with other German auxiliaries to the Allies and reportedly fought against his former commander in the Battle of Nations (Leipzig, Oct 1813) and at Waterloo (Jun 1815) the conflicts that twice dethroned the French emperor. After the Napoleonic wars in 1815, Reinecke returned to his native village of Helmarshausen where he practiced his trade of tailoring and became a lay preacher. He migrated to America in 1834 with his wife and children and settled in Frederick, MD, where he was persuaded by a local pastor to study for the ministry. He was ordained in 1837 after which he accepted a call to serve the charge at Shrewsbury. He died here in 1859. The little known military record of Rev. Reinecke was unearthed recently by another former pastor of the Shrewsbury United Church of Christ charge, Rev. Charles M. Mitzell, York while he was compiling a local church history. Rev. Mitzell came upon the story in an old history book dealing with pastors of the Reformed church in America. The volume's brief biography of the Napoleonic veteran was contributed by his son, Rev. Dr. E. W. Reinecke." on 23 May 1960 at Shrewsbury, York, PA, US.3
