Its simplicity of design suggests it was possibly designed by Niernsee and Neilson, and named perhaps for his widowhood. His son Ross R. Winans built a larger house next to it and then razed the cottage in 1894.9,10,11

Built next to his father's cottage of the same name which was built in 1864 and demolished in 1894. Overlooked a rocky cliff opposite Winans Avenue. It was sold to Marsden J. Perry in 1907, badly damaged by a hurricane in 1938 and demolished in 1948.9

His son was living in Paris on an allowance provided by his father. Thomas had abandoned his father on ship as his father prepared to leave Liverpool for the US with the bodies of his wife and another son, and headed directly for Paris where he married a Spanish actress over his father's objections. on 5 March 1908 at Baltimore, MD, US.29

Arthur Chilton Powell of Grace Protestant Episcopal Church, and were attended by his sister Gaun M. Hutton with Mr. Hutton and their daughters the Misses Elsie and Una Hutton, Mrs. Harold A. Prichard of Dobbs Ferry, NY, and Mr. Prichard, Mr. Ross W. Whistler, Mr. John E. Semmes (his lawyer), Sr., Mr Frank H. Hambleton, Dr. Edward F. Milholland, Alexander Brown, J. Swan Frick, Dr. Thomas McCrae, Dr. George Reuling, and Ferdinand C. Latrobe.2,19,3

  • Will*: He left a will on 30 April 1912 at Baltimore, MD, US; containing a generous bequest of $500,000 to Dorothy Bateman of Newport, RI, who paid thoughtful attention to him his last summer there. The rest of the estate is valued at 4 million dollars and is to be divided among his brother-in-law Ross W. Whistler and Georges Revillon, step-brother of his mother. Mr. Whistler was named his executor. His son Thomas who, he disowned after his rash marriage to a Spanish actress, is to receive an allowance totalling $200,000.
    He left $50,000 each to his "old and cherished" friends Margaret M. Smith who was engaged to a brother of his before he died, and Louisa M. Butts. He left $100,000 each to Julia Revillon, Thomas D. Whistler, brother of his late wife, and his wife's sister-in-law Mrs. Joseph S. Whistler. He also left $50,000 to Olga Winans, daughter of the late William M. Winans.31
