  • Note: He "The solicitors for the York Press had the pleasure of spending a night last week in a house that has been standing exactly a century. The builder of the house was a certain Michael Seifert whose history is even more romantic than that of the house he built. In the year 1798 Mr. Seifert erected the house on his farm in Dover township near Davidsburg. At the same time he began the erection of a barn, but before either of the buildings were entirely completed, for reasons unknown, he suddenly departed for parts unknown. He took with him a bag containing about a half bushel of gold and silver coin and another man's sweetheart besides. With these treasures, (obscure) his own and the other stolen, he made his way, it was afterwards ascertained, to the state of Ohio. The journey was a tedious one as but one horse was available. On this animal he placed the money and the woman, he himself traveled on foot. His beautiful wife and children were left behind in possession of his farm which, by the way, contained about six-hundred acres, together with the improvements he had so nearly completed. They improved the land and became rich. Meanwhile, the prodigal Michael, and his ill-gotten spouse also prospered in their then western home. He owned much land and a large grist mill, in which it is said he finally met a violent death by being caught in the machinery. Sometime before his death his two sons went west to make an agreement in regard to his wealth. They agreed that the children in Dover Township should have all that he left there, and all his wealth in the west was to go to his children and wife there. The old house is at present owned by Jacob Seifert a descendant of the builder. It is in excellent condition and good for another hundred years. A tablet in the gable end shows that Gochenauer was the master builder, and to his credit let it be said, "That a man's work live after him"." after 1755 at York, PA, US.4
